Crazy for the Craze!
In recent years it has become more and more popular to do DIY projects. Let me just say, I love this! I love DIY projects because there are few things that give you the sense of accomplishment that you get when you finish a project. There are some amazing sites out there that will give you free plans as well! (if you need help finding these, feel free to give us a call). With that said, there are projects that you should DIY and projects that you should not… This is a very important distinction to make with your home, which can cost you quite a bit of money in the short and long term. Here are some things to consider.
Does your job include any of these 5?:
1. Plumbing
There are some things that you can replace like a sink stopper, but if the job goes beyond that, you are going to want to have a professional come and take care of the problem. There may be some areas that you feel you might be able to take care of but when considering the job, you want to consider a few variables.
- How much is my time worth?
- How much will it cost if I have to have the job redone?
- Do I have the necessary tools?
- Do I have the skills to be able to do it right?
2. Electrical
This one might seem to go without saying but I’m going to say it anyway because I know there are a few of you who might think that this is not that hard. Electrical work, if done improperly, can cause serious injury or even death… let that sink in for a bit. That should be enough right there to let you know that if your job needs electrical work done, then please call a professional.
3. Roofing
This is an interesting one because even if you have a house without a steep pitch and even if you are skilled, one of the biggest factors with roofing is TIME. Do you have the necessary time to complete this task? We have all had DIY projects that end up getting dragged out and you have a bunch of wood in the garage or a room that still needs to have the carpeting finished. With a roof, as soon as you start this job, you are on the clock! The last thing you want is to take a small problem and make it a huge problem because now your roof is open and there is bad weather heading your way! If you need an inspection, don’t hesitate to reach out!
4. Structural Work
This is the unsung hero of your home. This is literally the skeleton of your home that is the most important element of your house. If structural work is not done well, not only could your house get flagged during an inspection if you try to sell it but the whole house of cards can be compromised. This is why it’s so important to have a professional involved in anything that has to do with the structure of your home.
5. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)
HVAC work is rarely a “get to it when you can” type of job. When you have a need for HVAC work, you need it done now! We have all heard the horror stories of the family who has their AC unit go out in the middle of July. Here in Texas, this can be a very serious problem. This can cause us to want to try and fix the problem ourselves and that would be a costly decision. The problem might not be as bad as it might seem but could be much worse if you try to “fix” the issue yourself. We are talking potentially thousands of dollars! Don’t risk it. Call a professional.
